Synopsis: 1969. The conflict in Vietnam has exploded to immeasurable proportions, and 18-year-old Dean Hill’s (Handley) number is up. Dean’s brother Eric (Bomer), who has already seen his share of combat, plans to take Dean to enlist in his beloved Marine Corps in hopes of keeping an eye on him rather than letting him take his chances at the local induction center. But Dean plans to confront Eric about dodging the draft after the boys and their respective girlfriends, Bailey (Baird) and Chrissie (Brewster), head across Texas for a final fling of serious fun. Soon after their journey begins, the foursome are spooked by a menacing pair of bikers, who causes a car accident and then attempts to rob the injured trio. However, Sheriff Hoyt (Ermey) arrives and turns the tables on their would-be assassin, before ordering Dean, Eric and Bailey into the back of the patrol car.

Unbeknownst to Chrissie, who watches everything happen from hiding, Hoyt is headed to the Hewitt family home where a man named Thomas (Bryniarski) is being groomed to become the terrifying monster known as Leatherface, and the rest of the Hewitt clan await. Chrissie attempts to convince Holden to help her, but he is on a one man rampage to avenge his girlfriend’s death. As Chrissie witnesses the horrors inflicted by the Hewitt family upon the people she loves, she realizes she is their only hope of survival.

TVshowsonDVD.com passed along word back in January that at Amazon.com there was a White Collar – Season 4 DVD pre-order listing which showed, at the time, a release date of June 4th. Usually that type of info from this big e-tailer is fairly reliable, so of course they let us know about it. But since then Amazon’s entry has been updated to remove the date, and instead it now just says “This title has not yet been released. You may pre-order it now and we will deliver it to you when it arrives.” They’ve been checking the studio announcements all along, of course, and Fox Home Entertainment has not yet formally announced this title. It IS in-the-works, and you can still pre-order it, but they’re as certain as possible that the item will not be available for general release in three weeks.

They’re sure that the release is being timed to hit stores just a few weeks before the broadcast premiere on the USA Network of the show’s fifth season, but that debut date hasn’t been announced yet. For the second, third and fourth seasons that new season premiere has occurred in mid-summer, but this time around the best guess is that the new season will actually start later, in the fall…which means the DVDs for the fourth season might not be available until that general time-frame (you should probably think along the lines of September or October, is what TVshowsonDVD.com is thinking… but that’s just a guess). Studio announcements for an in-store TV-DVD title usually (but not always) occur roughly 2-3 months before the street date.

Stay tuned for the upcoming general street date for White Collar – Season 4 on DVD, just as soon as Fox makes that information available.

The cast officially includes Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks, Julia Roberts as Dr. Emma Brookner, Matt Bomer as Felix Turner, Jim Parsons as Tommy Boatwright, Taylor Kitsch as Bruce Niles, Joe Mantello as Mickey Marcus, Jonathan Groff as Craig, Bruce Niles’ first lover. No actor has yet been announced for Ben Weeks, but we’re told that an offer is out. Casting is underway for other parts as well.

Executive produced by Murphy, Jason Blum (the “Paranormal Activity” series, “The Reader”), Dede Gardner (“The Tree of Life,” “Eat Pray Love”) and Dante di Loreto (“Glee,” HBO’s “Temple Grandin”), THE NORMAL HEART tells the story of the onset of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City in the early 1980s, taking an unflinching look at the nation’s sexual politics as gay activists and their allies in the medical Community fought to expose the truth about the burgeoning epidemic to a city in denial.

In 1981, writer Larry Kramer hosted a gathering of six gay men and their friends to discuss the “gay cancer,” and to talk about fundraising for research. This informal meeting in Kramer’s home would lead to the formation of Gay Men’s Health Crisis, one of the first advocacy groups for HIV prevention and care.

Kramer’s play debuted at New York’s Public Theatre in 1985 and was revived in Los Angeles and London and off-Broadway. The 2011 Broadway revival garnered five Tony nominations, winning for Best Revival, Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress.

I don’t know how serious it was that you almost had the role in a movie.

Matt Bomer: Yes, many incarnations ago.

What is your mindset about this character? I mean, from almost wanting to play voicing him and how do you view him?

Matt Bomer: Well, I also got to play him in a Japanese car commercial. Let’s not forget that. And thrilling portrayal. I’m kidding.

No, you know, it’s definitely tied into my life and career pretty heavily. But, you know, and I had a blast getting to work with JJ’s earlier drafts with Brett and, you know, as it happens many times, he left the project and a new film-maker came on, wanted to find his own Superman, and that’s life. But at the same time, it afforded my career so many great opportunities that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. So when they called me to play it I was like absolutely.

It’s a different beast because all you have… the only instrument you have to influence the character is your voice to convey who he is, where he is, what his emotional state is, and that was a particular challenge. You know, I don’t have the tights and cape and the glasses to play with, so… but it was great, man. I was in really good hands with this creative team, especially Andrea [Romano]. Andrea, she’s just, you know, a legend in her field. She was able to shepherd me in the right way, so it was a lot of fun.

Did you discover anything new about Superman by doing more internalization and more looking inside?

Matt Bomer: Well, it’s a particular challenge when you’re playing a role like this that’s been so iconic for me since I was, you know, 4 or 5 years old. Because inevitably you have in the back of your head all the different interpretations from the comics to the films to the cartoons to the TV series and so what you have to do is really focus on the story at hand and the incarnation at hand. So that’s what I tried to do.

And in this particular version I think he’s a very mature Superman. As usual he has a lot on his plate, but he has… he has a very paternal instinct towards Supergirl and he has a very protective instinct with Lois because he fears their relationship could endanger her. And so I try to keep… and he’s also dealing with Braniac, who’s a pretty weighty foe as you know I’m sure. So I try to keep all that in mind and keep things with Lois outside of that a little light and flirty and do as directed.

But I did get way too into it in the physical scenes. Because you take it seriously. I mean, you know, this is a role that a lot of people love and have ideas about so you wanna make sure you’re staying in that wheel house. But when we’re doing the fight scenes, I mean, I was really swinging and bouncing all around the sound room and I’d look into the booth and they’d be laughing at me. I was like, “You want the real thing or you want a fake one?” So we had a lot of fun. It was a good time.

Doing voice over work, it’s gotta be the greatest gig as an actor, right?

Matt Bomer: It’s the greatest gig in the sense that you can show up in your pyjamas and not really have to worry about all the sort of superficial aspects that go into being in front of the camera. But it’s a tough gig in that, like I said, you know, all you have is your voice to influence the characters.

Do you think it’s harder almost?

Matt Bomer: In some ways. In some ways it’s a lot easier and in some ways it’s a lot harder. You know, you might have to… if you don’t have your face to convey an emotion, you might have to give a little more on your voice and so it’s kind of a fine line.

Since you’re playing Superman as a voice actor, have you ever thought about maybe you might be doing some other superhero parts?

Matt Bomer: I think that’d be great, man. I think…

Like, who would you wanna play?

Matt Bomer: Oh, gosh. Nightwing. Just saying. Getting that out there.

Based on the Geoff Johns/Gary Frank 2008 DC Comics release “Superman: Brainiac,” Superman: Unbound is the latest DC universe animated original movie from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. The story is about a destructive force that is devastating planets across the galaxy, with Earth next in its sights, and even Superman may not be capable of halting the destruction alone. The film features the voices of Matt Bomer (White Collar) as Superman, John Noble (Fringe) as Brainiac, Molly Quinn (Castle) as Supergirl, and Stana Katic (Castle) as Lois Lane.

While at WonderCon, actor Matt Bomer, who is quite obviously a long-time Superman fan, spoke at a round-table interview about the first time he imagined himself as a superhero, what he wanted to bring to the iconic role, who he thinks this film will appeal to, why Superman is still relevant after all these years, and how he’d also love the chance to play Nightwing. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Question: When was the first time in your life that you imagined yourself as Superman?

MATT BOMER: I think I was five or six. My mom made me a home-made cape for Halloween, one year. First, I was a Superboy to my brother’s Superman ‘cause whatever superhero he was, I was either the lesser version of it or the sidekick. So, when he was Batman, I was Robin. When he was Superman, I was Superboy. But, like any four-year-old, it played very heavily into my psychology. And I think that’s what makes the character resonate for so long, with so many people. He’s who we hope we could be, in the most dire of circumstances. But, my mom made me a home-made cape, and I wore that thing out for two years. I didn’t even care. I had no shame about it. I would strap it on. It had a snap. I’d get on my bike and just let it trail behind me. People would laugh. I didn’t give a damn. I was Superman! Now, I’m the voice of Superman.

How did you wrap your head around this role? What did you want to carry over from other interpretations, and how did you want to make it your own thing?

BOMER: That’s a good question. The character is so iconic to everyone, and not just guys. I think every guy and girl would love to get to play Superman, at some point in their life. Am I right, girls? You can’t help but have all those incarnations, especially if you’re a fan of the character, in the back of your head. But, you can become so busy with that, that it distracts you from the story at hand. All you really have to work with is the script that you’re given, and you don’t want to get too sidetracked on, “Oh, but in 1937, he was more like this.” You just have that story. So, I tried to keep up some of the consistencies of the characters that are maintained throughout every incarnation of the story, and then just deal with the script that we were given. In this particular story, it’s a very mature Superman that we’re seeing. He’s always dealing with weighty issues, but he’s very paternal towards Supergirl, he’s very protective of Lois and he’s also having to deal with Braniac, who is a very intense adversary. So, I tried to balance the heavier, more mature version of him with a lighter, fun, more charming sense of playfulness with Lois, in our scenes.

If you had to talk to your fans of your on-camera work, who have never seen an animated feature, what would you say to them to convince them to give this a shot?

BOMER: Well, I think anybody who likes Superman will love the story. The creative team behind it is fantastic. I think it’s a great, new take, in some ways, on the character and the story, and I think it will appeal to a lot of different audiences. So, there’s no reason not to give it a shot, really. If you don’t like Superman, something’s wrong with you!

Who was your Superman as a kid? Was it Christopher Reeve?

BOMER: Yeah. First, it was the comic. I remember, distinctly, a puzzle that I had, that my mom had gotten me, where he was battling a gorilla, that I still have. Nerd! And then, the first film version, obviously, was the first Christopher Reeve film. And then, I followed it through that whole franchise.

Visually, there’s always the glasses for Clark Kent to differentiate him from Superman. But here, all you have is your voice.

BOMER: All you have is your voice. It’s pretty naked and cold in there, baby.

Did you have that moment where you were like, “I’ve got to change my pitch a little bit”?

BOMER: Yeah, totally. Yes, is the short answer to that, and the truthful answer. The good part of it is that you get to show up to work in your pyjamas if you want, and a lot of this more external aspects of film-making you get to toss by the wayside. But, the more challenging part is that all you have to convey character and emotion is your voice. We recorded it first, and then they animated it. And then, we went back and changed lines and fine-tuned things. So, it was interesting to see. You record something ahead of time, and then it ends up that that was actually a close-up, so screaming it wasn’t so great, so we’d have to change it. But, (dialogue director) Andrea [Romano] is such a legend. She was such an integral part of my childhood. If you IMDB her, you’ll know what I’m saying. So, it was very challenging in terms of that, and I wanted to take it very seriously because I knew that this was a character that people had so many preconceived notions about. I relied pretty heavily on her to shepherd me through it. And I got really into it, in the fight scenes. I didn’t realize that you didn’t really have to throw punches and kicks, so they laughed at me. They got a couple good laughs at me, in the sound booth, but I wanted to bring my best to it.

Did you find that being physical helped affect your voice?

BOMER: In some ways, yeah, especially in the fight scenes. But, what I realized is that you still really have to use every part of yourself, and be even more expressive with your voice. There were times when I had to give more than usual, and there were times where I had to give less. I was cutting my teeth on something new, so I was just learning on the fly.

For you, why is Superman still relevant, after all these years?

BOMER: Well, he’s the first superhero. He represents what we all hope we could be, in the most difficult circumstances. He represents our best self and the best version of us. Outside of, as a kid, just wanting to be able to fly and run faster than a speeding locomotive and being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, we’d like to hope that, when push comes to shove, we can do the right thing. I think as long as there is that hope in our society and in the zeitgeist of superheroes, Superman will be relevant.

So now that you finally gotten to play Superman, is there any other character that you would like to play? I think you’d make an excellent Nightwing.

BOMER: That’s what I was going to say! You took the words right out of my mouth. I’m just putting it out there. You heard it here first.

Do you keep up with all the comic books now?

BOMER: I try. My life’s pretty busy these days. I’m more of a graphic novel guy, but I try when I can.

Superman: Unbound will be released on Blu-ray, DVD, OnDemand and for download on May 7th.

After the world premiere screening of Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment’s Superman: Unbound, the cast and creative team behind the animated feature took the stage at WonderCon 2013 to field some questions. Included on the panel were director James Tucker (Legion of Super Heroes), writer Bob Goodman (Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Parts 1 and 2), renowned voice casting director Andrea Romano (Batman: The Animated Series) and voice actors Matt Bomer (Magic Mike) and Molly C. Quinn (Castle). While the new DC feature was obviously at the forefront of the questions, the panel did reveal some information about upcoming projects coming out of DC. Hit the jump for a recap of the Q&A and check out my review of the movie here.

After the screening, the panel was moderated by publicist Gary Miereanu, who pointed out that Tucker recently took over the reins from Bruce Timm as the supervisor of DC’s animated slate. Timm will be developing original material in his time away. Meanwhile Tucker will be focusing on bringing out more characters in the DC universe with three films planned for release in 2014. The next DC animated film will be Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, which may make an appearance at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con in some form or another.

Here are some of the highlights from tonight’s panel Q&A:

Goodman, who has been writing for DC animation for the better part of the last two decades, actually wrote Superman: Unbound before writing both instalments of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

Though Batman: The Dark Knight Returns was too dense even for a two-parter, Superman: Unbound required a bit more fleshing out, so Goodman added sub-plots for Clark Kent with Lois Lane and Superman with Supergirl.

Bomer, who is also a fan of Thundercats and Nightwing, loved playing the iconic role and revealed that he wore out his Superman cape as a little kid.

Bomer brought a physical component to the voice-acting role and aimed to create his own version of Superman rather than worrying about previous iterations.

Romano called Bomer’s casting “pitch perfect,” worked with Quinn on Ben-10: Ultimate Alien and spoke quite highly of John Noble’s work, calling him “incredibly elegant and wonderful…[a] remarkable performance; rich and deep and full and certainly not one note.”

Noble voiced the film’s antagonist, Brainiac, but also Brainiac’s ship, though his voice was slightly altered in an electronic fashion.

Quinn said it was pretty easy to relate to Supergirl, who is connected with a strong sense of right and wrong, and had fun playing a teenager who can fly.

Tucker spoke on the process of adapting Geoff Johns’ comic arc Superman: Brainiac and commented on changing the visual style, saying “Why draw a caricature of Christopher Reeves when you have Matt Bomer?”

When asked why they changed the title and the ending, Miereanu said there were some licensing issues while Goodman admitted to being asked by execs to make specific changes. The original intent was to leave an ambiguous ending to the film for a possibility of following it up with the New Krypton storyline. Other suggested titles they threw around were: Lost City of Metropolis and Flesh and Metal.

When asked about a conclusion to Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series, Miereanu said, “Anything is possible.” He had the same response to a question about Superman: Red Son, though Tucker said that it’s “definitely on my wish list.”

Goodman spoke to his version of Lois Lane, saying, “[She's] one of the best characters ever…the strongest character in this movie.”

Quinn likes Supergirl but her favorite comic book character is Poison Ivy, because she “likes being bad.”

The last question of the night asked when The Riddler would be featured again. Miereanu guaranteed that fans would see The Riddler by 2015, though he didn’t elaborated in what capacity. Goodman confessed that The Riddler stories are among the hardest to write.

Superman: Unbound will be available on Blu-ray/DVD/VOD starting May 7th and will include a special ten-minute behind-the-scenes making of DC Entertainment’s next animated feature: Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox.
